VOCATIONAL TRAINING PLATFORM

This website is a vocational training for novices to gain the necessary competences as a photographer. We designed a tutorial-simulation hybrid to ensure optimal training. Photography is a discipline that needs procedural AND semantic knowledge. While simulations allow for acquiring procedural knowledge in form of a trial-and-error approach, tutorials provide the necessary background information users will store in form of semantic knowledge.

DESIGNING A VOCATIONAL TRAINING: THE PROCESS

I. WORK ANALYSIS

1. Research:

• To understand the context of the job including the goals and constraints of the work, the range of activities and situations a professional is usually engaged in, the knowledge, education and competences needed
• Helped to define learning objectives
• Helped to develop initial ideas about the range of tasks suitable for teaching a novice
• Helped to identify knowledge content that could be transferred into a training situation

2. Observation

• Observed an expert on the job and to monitor their behavior in a given task
• We used the verbalization technique, in which the observed person expresses what he/she is doing and why during the activity. This technique can be used in non-verbal and non-collaborative activities

3. Interview

• After the observation phase all remaining questions were asked in a short interview or via email

III. TRAINING DESIGN

MY ROLE

The project was created by my colleague and me. We equally distributed the work between developing the concept and writing content. While my colleague was focusing on icon design and interactive buttons, I was working on content and layout.

Note: Originally, we were planning to develop an iPad app. Due to technical constraints, however, we had to switch platforms and decided to develop a website with Adobe Muse. This is why the format is a iPad like.
